The Kerala government has announced its intention to request central financial backing for major infrastructure projects in Thiruvananthapuram, with a focus on expanding the airport, developing ports, and upgrading urban systems. Transport Minister C P John and Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor met on October 21, 2026, to identify key priorities, including securing additional land for airport expansion and securing funding for initiatives at Vizhinjam port.
One of the immediate needs is acquiring 22 acres of extra land to expand Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, a task the state will likely pursue with central government assistance. The meeting also emphasized port-related projects, including funding under the Sagarmala Scheme for Vizhinjam. The state plans to seek support for rehabilitation efforts tied to port expansion, as well as development of the Valiyathura port and green fuel bunkering facilities.
Urban infrastructure improvements remain a critical priority. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation will seek central funding to address drainage problems and coastal erosion, while proposals under the Urban Challenge Fund may cover broader city upgrades. Water management will also receive attention, with plans to increase storage capacity at the Peppara dam and secure central support for the National Waterway.
Logistics and connectivity projects, including multi-modal logistics parks and the Melarannoor railway overbridge, were discussed as ways to enhance regional transport networks. However, their implementation will depend on securing funding approvals and obtaining necessary administrative clearances.
The meeting also addressed financial relief for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation, with discussions centered on potential income tax exemptions. Exploratory talks took place about leveraging corporate funding for a Tata hospital through corporate social responsibility initiatives, though no formal commitments were reached. Tharoor is expected to raise these matters during follow-up discussions with the Union government.
District Collector K S Anju participated in the meeting, and attendees agreed to establish regular progress reviews for pending projects. The state’s proposals now move to further negotiations with the central government, with outcomes dependent on funding availability and administrative resolutions.
These discussions highlight Kerala’s efforts to modernize Thiruvananthapuram’s infrastructure, though the timeline for approvals and project execution remains unclear.
