On September 18, 2026, a severe downpour in Enugu State triggered landslides, blocking access to Nenwenta and neighboring Ugwueme communities. This disaster resulted in a building collapse, claiming six lives. The landslide also obstructed the road connecting these areas to the rest of Enugu State, hindering residents’ movement and emergency response efforts.
Emergency Response Hindered by Landslide
The affected communities faced significant challenges in terms of mobility, while emergency responders struggled to access the area. To bypass the blocked road, some residents had to travel through Abia and Imo states to reach other parts of Enugu. The building collapse, which involved a raised water tank, occurred after heavy rainfall and landslides hit the area.
Anthony Nwankwo, representing Awgu South State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, brought attention to the incident through a motion of urgent public importance. He urged the Enugu State Ministry of Works, the Enugu State Emergency Management Authority, and the Ecological Fund to intervene. Nwankwo stated that “faster access for emergency responders could have improved the chances of rescuing people trapped in the collapsed structure,” which reflects his assessment of the situation.
Environmental Risks and Building Safety
Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly warned residents about the dangers of constructing buildings near hills and engaging in unsafe soil and stone excavation, citing the potential for increased landslide risks. The incident raises concerns about the safety and integrity of buildings, particularly those supporting heavy water tanks.
